Re-imagining the UK charity sector

I was reflecting on this model by Charles Handy referenced in the CASS Report - Peering over the Precipice.

The simple message is that organisations need to re-invent themselves while they are successful and before the inevitable downturn.

The reality for most of the UK Third Sector is that they haven't taken the path of the thin blue line. The chaos of Covid-19 offers a window of radical reset for those organisations that have the self-awareness and honesty (humility) to realise that current models are redundant.

This understanding was also referenced in a quote I saw while doing my MBA. It was a reflection on Corporate America in the 90s.

"General Motors, Sears & IBM were the greatest companies in their industries, the best of the best in the world. These companies did not make gigantic mistakes. They were not led by stupid inept people. The only mistake they made was to keep doing whatever it was that had made them successful for a little too long".

The messages and hints have been out there for a long time.

I have developed this theme further in my latest blog: Envisioning the ‘new normal’.
